Mobile is Much More than Ads

August 3rd, 2011

I just read an article recently about the mobile initiatives craft retailer Michaels has undertaken. While nothing they have done is really earth-shattering from an innovation standpoint, I have to say I like quite a bit the customer-centric approach they appear to have taken and their focus on enhancing the store experience.

iAd Hubris?

March 31st, 2011

It isn’t often that I walk into a meeting with super high hopes and walk out confused, but about a year ago, that happened.
We had a get-together with high-level sales folks from iAd (formerly of Quattro) and I was expecting interesting conversation, witty banter, and lots of opportunities for our clients to get an early [...]

Going Mobile: The Whole World Is Now Virtual

February 24th, 2011

More and more, we are going to find people just like Benjamin DeClue who, as the St. Louis Dispatch noted in a recent article ” . . .doesn’t step foot inside a store without his BlackBerry. As he browses the aisles, he multitasks by keeping one eye on the shelves and one on his smart [...]

Bad App = Bad Brand

November 17th, 2010

As my colleague Garrick Schmitt recently wrote in an Advertising Age article, we are “periously close to reaching a bubble in the app-internet.” With over half a million apps in circulation (and only like 10% of those for fart sounds or fake call), it is hardly surprising that we are reaching app overload, or that [...]

Mobile: Think Time and Space

June 30th, 2010

About a year ago, I wrote a post on mobile that I still think is mostly right. My main argument in the article was that advertisers miss the opportunity on mobile precisely because they think of it as an advertising medium.
That is still correct. I do think that iAd and the coming onslaught [...]

April 13th, 2010

Like evolution, changes come in big pushes, not gradual changes. That’s what it feels like to me over the past few weeks in regards to mobile advertising.
When big changes like this come, things start to feel like they are moving very quickly, and many people’s reactions are to dismiss the changes. Think Twitter and email. [...]

Facebook 2nd Most Popular Site!

February 22nd, 2010

Who woulda thunk it?  Facebook has just surpassed Yahoo!  as the 2nd most visited site on the internet behind Google.  It certainly validates that social media is huge, and that communication and information surely are the killer apps of the internet.

But what are the implications of this information?  As marketers, we have to [...]

Making Mobile Work

July 11th, 2009

For many years, marketers have struggled with what to do with mobile.  Because mobile phones are so pervasive, so personal, and always with us, they seem like the holy grail of marketing.  But why has it taken mobile so long to take off?
The latest research from Universal McCann and AOL helps, I think, make it [...]
